While the worldwide recession has forced many golf clubs to pull in their horns and curb development, two courses designed by the legendary Christy O'Connor Junior in the West of Ireland, are bucking the trend.
Glasson, with its 65-room hotel and glass dining extension overlooking Lough Ree opened in 1993 was formerly the home of owners Tom Reid and his wife Breda. It’s still a family business and they are rightly proud of what they have achieved at this undulating layout where water comes into play on five holes including the 15th, a 185-yard par-3 Sawgrass-style with its peninsula green.
The TaylorMade Golf
Tour Burner Iron Set Left handed each have an offset inverted cone clubface that gives faster average ball speed and longer distance on shots due to the thin and fast 2.2 mm face. That revolutionary face offers increased c.o.r., and the cavity badge delivers a super satisfying feel and sound and a clean, classic look at the address.
Only the preceding 14th - a dogleg par-5 betters it in my opinion. It demands a testing tee shot as a prelude to a lay-up on this 566-yard hole. The second shot must avoid a waste area to the left and a lake to the right while the approach is threatened by the water.
And there’s no real respite at the 16th, a 452-yard par-4 rated by many the most difficult hole on the course. The 17th is a 545-yard dogleg par-5 with a real chance of a birdie even for a moderate handicapper and while the 18th is only 383 yards it plays uphill and is deceptively long with no fewer than eight bunkers surrounding the green.
In addition, the
Tour Burner Iron Set model features TaylorMade's Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) which provides faster ball speeds from a larger face area, resulting in more distance, even on off-center hits. A thin, fast, 2.2 millimeter face provides a very high COR, resulting in higher ball speeds and more distance. Its Multi-Functional sole has a medium width, and a beveled trailing edge for the combination of a low center of gravity with the exceptional playability of a thin-soled club.
Glasson's practice ground has three academy holes including two par-4s and with its well-stocked golf shop and four-star hotel is definitely a quality resort. Set against Atlantic Ocean, O'Connor has blended the stunning backdrop of Galway Bay and the rugged coastline to produce a memorable course which has already staged European Tour events.
Together with its new clubhouse, purpose-built academy and fully-equipped pro shop it's well worth adding to any west coast schedule. The fifth and par-5 sixth holes with Galway Bay running along the right hand side provide an exacting early test while the 7th is a par-3 of just 140 yards with a carry over water to a two-tiered green.
On the back nine, the 12th is another excellent par-4 with the approach over the same lake encountered at the 7th. The finishing stretch is the most scenic part of the course and includes an outstanding par-3 13th across a natural marsh to a green set diagonally and protected on all sides.
In the end, golfers can't miss the cheap golf clubs. Everyone deserves the good looking iron.
