When Donald Trump awakened Lytle early one morning in 1993 to hire him as his AT&T caddie, it was the beginning of a relationship that produced one of the more memorable tales in the history of the tournament. There have been a number of apocryphal retellings, and Lytle — with verification from Trump and others — set the record straight.

"I did not hang up on him," Lytle said, chuckling. "I was sleeping, it was early, and the phone rings and he says, ‘Rocket, this is the Donald.’ And I said, ‘Who the hell is the Donald? This is the Rocket, and you woke me up.’ "

The TaylorMade Burner Plus driver wide, beveled, multi-functional sole design combines the low, deep CG of a wide sole and the playability of a thin sole for an unbeatable combo of power and feel. Perimeter weighting creates high MOI for unsurpassed forgiveness and a large clubface with Inverted Cone Technology produces Burner ball speed and distance. Superfast technology uses light shafts and grips to promote a faster swing speed and more yardage.

"We’re paired with Paul Goydos at the time," Lytle said. "So Donald wants to hit a 6-iron and Goydos wants him to hit 6-iron and I want him to hit 5-iron. So we’re going back and forth and finally I said to him: ‘O.K., Donald, I’ll tell you what, you hit the 5-iron and if I’m wrong you don’t have to pay me. If I’m right, you pay me double.’

"He looked at me and said, ‘You sure?’ " Lytle continued. "And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m sure.’ I was sure, but I was thinking maybe he’d hit it too hard and try to prove me wrong. But he hit it perfect. Two bounces and it went in the hole."

Many caddies have talked a player out of hitting the wrong club with good results. Bob Considine talked a 22-year-old Jerry Pate out of hitting a 4-iron from the rough on a 190-yard approach to the final hole of the 1976 United States Open at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Pate hit a 5-iron and the ball landed 2 feet from the hole. Bigger stage, more at stake, but Pate still had to putt.

"It was a crazy scene," Trump said in a telephone interview. "I had a great friend there, Payne Stewart, who was waiting with me because he was in the group behind us. And while we’re having the discussion about what to hit, he said, ‘You know what, you’re swinging too hard.’

"So, we had the combination of Payne saying you’re swinging too hard, and Rocket saying the 6-iron isn’t enough. TaylorMade Burner Plus was 188 yards and I hit my irons pretty long and we had a little helping wind. So I went with the 5-iron. When it goes in the hole, I said to Payne, ‘Is that better?’ He said, ‘That’s better.’ "

Lytle is a thickly muscled man who walks with a slight limp. "Hip’s wearing out," he said in a burst, gravel in his voice. On Friday, he resembled a bear swatting a salmon as he swept a small basket of practice balls from a table on the range at Spyglass. He set the balls down carefully on the pristine grass so his player, Lewis Dickey Jr., could warm up.

"It’s like he was born on this land," said Dickey, chief executive of Cumulus Media. "He knows every inch of it."
