Graeme McDowell was back on familiar turf this week, spending time with his former University of Alabama college coach Alan Kaufman and the current UAB golf team at Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club and the Country Club of Birmingham.
The 31-year-old life-changing year also included a win in the Celtic Manor Wales Open Ryder Cup immortality and victory in the Chevron World Challenge where beat Tiger Woods in spectacular style.
"I started off the season a bit slow and then boom! he told an enraptured audience of students. "I win in Wales and the next thing I'm picking the US Open trophy and life changed pretty quickly. My game's been improving a lot for the last few years and it's nice to get a bit of a reward."
"I can't come to my old college without causing a bit of a stir anymore," said McDowell, who won the US Open in Pebble Beach last June and is now a household name and familiar face wherever he travels around the world. When he left, you knew darn well he was a great player. I don't know how far he can go but he certainly left with top credentials and the rest is history. Added McDowell: "My three years at UAB were a big turning point in my career. I certainly grew as a person, both physically and mentally. Coach Kaufman had enough belief in me to bring me out here. I traveled every tournament in my three years here and developed as a player.
In a word, it looks very nice.
